ABOUT THE DESIGNER

NANAIMO | BRITISH COLUMBIA | VANCOUVER ISLAND

Hi, my name is Derek Buckingham, founder of Afro Boy Productions. Back in 2000 I attended a 3 year design program at Grant McEwan located in Edmonton, Alberta. I received a certificate in Design Foundations and a diploma in Design & Digital Media.

I started my career shortly after graduating, growing unique skill-sets designing for a variety of industries, creating everything from headstones, monuments, websites, print design, signage, animations, and so much more. With close to two decades as a designer I have worked for various agencies such as Alpha, 460 Communications, Impact Visual Communications, and Consumer Strategies Group.

In 2017 I established Afro Boy Productions where I continue to create industry leading designs to this day. From 2019 to 2022 I took a position at Alpha as lead designer, where I learned how to design Shopify and BigCommerce websites. Alpha gave me the opportunity to learn and grow as a designer.

Currently I work full time as Senior Designer for Noodle Wave Media, a Citizen of Republix. Working with dental, health, and small to medium sized business has helped honed my skills as designer and leader.

You could say I have love for all things design. But in the off time, you will find me on one of the many hiking trails on Vancouver Island, mountain biking (#gnarnanaimo), exploring nature with my camera, spending time with the family, my wife, and our cat Christmas. Did I mention I like to play videogames. I’m a bit of a big kid at heart.
